Nestled in the area behind Wyoming to Lisarow is a belt of bushland known as Katandra Reserve, part of Gosford City Council’s Costal Open Space system. We visited the St John Lookout and surrounding open grounds.
A main feature of the reserve is St John Lookout, with vistas overlooking Erina, Holgate and Matcham. Looking down, see if you can spot the pockets of rainforest.
There is an abundance of beautiful tall trees in the bushland here, stop and look up. They are magnificent to admire as you wonder how many decades they have lived through.
Being frequent visitors here we have always found Katandra to have certain solitude to it and with plenty of space to go around it never feels crowded. In fact, some Central Coast residents don’t even know it exists!
Several bushwalking tracks run through Katandra with the 4.8 km Katandra Circuit and 1.2 km Guringai walk both commencing from St John Lookout.
There are great track notes describing these walks available at the fantastic website Wildwalks. We highly recommend checking it out for all the information you need on these walks.
We hope to return to enjoy the bushwalks on our next visit to St John Lookout.
Katandra Reserve offers inspiration to kids interested in bush play or bush craft, with sticks, leaves and rocks to collect and play with (just make sure anything you collect is on the ground already, flowers or seeds should not be picked off bushes/trees.)
Our Central Coast Weekender pre-schoolers were very keen to crouch down and study the numerous ant holes around the area.
Why not collect some dropped dried Banksia to create your own set of big bad Banksia men from May Gibb’s Snugglepot and Cuddlepie?
There is plenty of open space to play games and run around here, our school aged kids particularly enjoyed jumping of the logs and rocks whilst performing air kicks!
Dogs are not permitted in the reserve.
Gosford City Council is responsible for maintaining the facilities at Katandra. With picnic tables and free BBQ’s available for use why not bring a picnic to enjoy.
You will find public toilets here, located near the Lookout.
