Hernando’s Hideaway Mexican Kitchen

Funky mexican restaurant in Long Jetty on the Central Coast

Fun and affordable restaurants are dotted around the Central Coast and one unique option is Hernando’s Hideaway Mexican Kitchen in Long Jetty.   We headed to Hernando’s for the first time late last year for an end of year celebration. Not only was the food amazing, the service was prompt and friendly.

Hernando’s Hideaway is a modern mexican restaurant with a menu options ranging from $8 to $18 for tapas dishes and around $30 for a single large dish. The dishes are served a few at a time in a communal tapas style that is relaxing and enjoyable.

You might be pausing now and wondering if the food is too spicy for you??  It’s not, and people who don’t like spicy food are well catered for, as are those among us that love spicy food! The staff are attentive to people’s preferences for spice and there are plenty of options. The staff are only too happy to explain the menu or answer any questions, so don’t be afraid to ask.

The restaurant is small and intimate, creating a fun environment. If the restaurant is full, it may get a little noisy, but on our night there the atmosphere was great. For groups of seven or more, there is a set menu. We loved the set menu with the dishes arriving throughout two hours for us to share. There is no separate menu for kids (it would be a shame to separate food for kids though!). The best options for little kids would be nachos or tacos.

There are two sittings in an evening, either at 6pm or 8pm. The two hour sitting was plenty of time for us, however you will need to plan a second destination if you want to be out for longer.   We headed to the Entrance Hotel after our dinner finished at 8pm.

The dish of the night had to be Elote – chargrilled corn ‘street style’ with chipotle aioli. We have no idea how corn can taste this amazing, but it really does. Make it a must order item on your visit.

The drinks menu is made to match and presents an awesome range of mexican beers, house Sangria and cocktails or wines from across Spain, Argentina or Chile.

Hernando’s is popular and booking is absolutely necessary.  They have regular updates on Facebook on availability so if you are looking for a last minute booking, check in there first.

Head out for a walk after dinner in summer time and you might just catch a sunset like this!
